Consistency of baby food
The first and primary question that arise in all mothers mind, as the baby is about to introduce to the world of solids, is “what should be the consistency of food to feed to the baby?” The obvious reply to this question from different sources is food should have flowing consistency. To be more precise consistency of baby food to keep when feeding depends on below mentioned factors:
- Age of the baby
- 6 to 7 months: Flowing consistency or puree form ( crucial age as starting with solids)
- 8 to 9 months: Thick consistency(liquid with little solid portion)
- 10 to 12 months : Soft, chewable chunks
- Consistency should be easy to swallow, and this will increase the liking of the baby towards the food.
Useful Tips
- Do taste the recipe so prepared before feeding it to the baby.
- Try to serve the mixture warm as seen more liked by babies.
- The proportion of the ingredients be altered according to babies diet, babies liking towards the recipe and time (lunch/dinner) on which baby is taking the khichdi
- Short grained rice is preferred because it releases the starch in a better way and makes a delicious wet khichdi for the baby to chew and swallow.
- Spices should be introduced to babies after 1 year. Alternatively, since asafoetida (hing) helps in reducing colic, bloating and other stomach problems, it can be added to the baby food recipe with tadka of 2 to 3 drops of ghee only.
- A piece of potato and 7 to 8 peas can also be added to the khichdi mixture.
- Always check with your paediatrician before giving any new food to the baby.
